Supercar customiser Yianni picks Aventador S to take on Tesla Model X P100D in drag race

Supercars vs SUVs... the world's gone mad

NOT SO long ago, if you’d have suggested a drag race between a seven-seat SUV and a Lamborghini supercar, you’d have been laughed out of the pub. And then Tesla came along.

The performance of Tesla’s electric cars is now well-documented, and even its Model X SUV is lightning quick. The long-range version can hit 60mph from standstill in 4.7sec but the hottest model — with a “Ludicrous Mode”, no less — can manage 0-60mph in just 2.8sec.

To highlight its frankly ridiculous acceleration, Mat Watson from car buying website Carwow used the Tesla Model X P100D, which features two electric motors powering all four wheels and over 760bhp, to take on three other high performance SUVs, including a Lamborghini Urus, in a drag race. Watson wiped the floor with all of them.

Driving the Urus was car customiser and TV presenter Yianni Charalambous, who was so aggrieved at being beaten that he returned to take on the Tesla again, only this time in another Lamborghini: the Aventador S.

This would be a very different fight indeed. The Aventador S has 730bhp, so nearer that of the P100D, as well as four wheel drive. But importantly, it has a dry weight of 1,575kg — around a tonne less than the Model X. And let’s not forget the role of gearing here: the Tesla has a single speed but the Aventador has a 7-speed transmission, meaning as the miles per hour increase, the power can keep being delivered to the wheels for maximum acceleration.

But is it enough to fight off the wild, instant torque of the Tesla’s twin electric motors? Watch the video above to find out. Either way, videos like this help shatter traditional ideas of car types and performance.
