Kia with a sting in its tail beats Ford Mustang muscle car in a drag race

MOST DRIVERS buy a Kia because they are sensible cars, at sensible prices, with a seven-year long warranty – which is, again, jolly sensible. But petrolheads who test drive the new Stinger GT S might choose to buy it to make some mischief and embarrass Ford Mustang drivers.

In a race away from traffic lights, the Stinger GT is shown to be faster than a Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 GT.

The news should be enough to send shivers down the spines of Ford bosses. The Mustang is the company’s flagship sports car, meant to fly the flag for Motown muscle. Yet the Korean car gets the better of it in this head-to-head test.

The test, carried out by Australian website Motoring, suggests the Kia’s secret is a twin-turbo V6 engine that appears to deliver more power and performance than official statistics would have customers believe.

Despite having a comparatively small 3.3-litre V6 engine, boasting 365bhp, against the Mustang’s 5-litre, V8 motor with 404bhp, the Stinger GT S takes the honours in the drag race.

In this video, the Stinger GT S accelerates from a standstill to a quarter mile waypoint in 12.8 seconds, compared with 13.3 seconds for the Mustang.

The Stinger GT S costs £40,495 in the UK, versus £38,095 for the version of Mustang that is used in the test. However, a facelifted Mustang, with more engine power (445bhp), is due in showrooms soon, priced from £41,095.
