German teenager banned from driving 49 minutes after passing test

AN 18-year old in Germany has been banned from driving after traffic officers caught him doing 95kph (59mph) on a 50kph (31mph) road just 49 minutes after passing his test.

The teenager was recorded breaking the speed limit by Märkischer Kreis District Police using a hand-held radar gun in the town of Hemer, North Rhine-Westphalia.

As he wasn’t even an hour into his two-year new driver probation period (which is standard for all new drivers in Germany), on top of being slapped with a €200 fine he will only get his licence back if he passes an “expensive retraining” programme.

In addition, the driver’s original probation period will also be increased to four years.

As there were four other people in the car when police pulled it over, they suspect they may have encouraged the teen to drive quickly.
