ARE YOU sitting comfortably? Probably not as comfortably as a driver of the latest Mercedes S-Class. Its seats are so sophisticated they can not only heat and cool your body but also give different types of massages. But what goes on beneath the surface of the seat to ensure everyone is sat serenely?
To find out, YouTubers What’s Inside literally stuck a knife into the leather and delved underneath to uncover the modern mechanisms lurking inside.
The heating elements are immediately clear to see but beneath those lurk the mechanisms for the various massage functions, which include a range of feel-good treatments, from shoulder rub and lumbar stretch to a full-torso hot stone treatment, that take the grind out of a traffic jam.
Unsurprisingly, there are no actual hot stones within the seat. Instead, it comprises a complicated air control unit, air pockets, side bolsters that let the seat grip its occupant through a corner, a pair of fans for the cooling function, airbags for crash safety, memory foam and even a fire extinguisher.
The What’s Inside brand began in 2015 as a father-son school project, when Lincoln and his father Dan took various sports balls apart. It has since grown into one of the most successful channels on YouTube, with more than 5m subscribers.
