Spectacular CCTV footage captures tyre exploding during inflation

Failure was likely caused by a defect in the sidewall of the tyre

A MOTORIST in the United States had an extremely lucky escape, when a damaged tyre exploded while it was being inflated.

The spectacular moment at a garage in Maryland on October 9 is thought to have been caused by a failure in a severely worn area that had formed in the under-inflated tyre.

As shown in the CCTV footage, the failure of the offside front tyre was powerful enough to tear the wheel arch away from the car. The piece of bodywork was later found 25ft up a nearby tree, according to reports.

The CCTV clip was uploaded by the manager of the garage, who wants to raise awareness of the dangers of defective tyres.
