Car Clinic: Does my car need its scheduled service if I've not put many miles on it?

Your motoring problems solved

Q. I’ve driven my Audi TTS only 1,800 miles in 18 months but the service light has appeared. Do I need an oil service or can I go on a bit longer, given my mileage?
SP, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

A. You should change your oil once a year, especially if you’re doing such low mileage. Any engine left for long periods will develop internal condensation — moisture — which will reduce the lubricant and protective qualities of the oil and accelerate corrosion. An oil change is the cheapest way to extend the life of your engine. It also pays to have a general service at the same time.
