It is expected to cost about £100,000 when it goes on sale at the end of the year. What level of luxury does that afford its owners? Well, It comes with enough firepower to dismiss a boardroom full of executives; under the bonnet is a 6.3-litre V12 engine that develops 592bhp – more than a Porsche 911 Turbo S sports car.

And because the new boardroom Beemer has four-wheel drive, it can make an executive decision in the blink of an eye and power from standstill to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds.

As standard, the M760Li xDrive comes with Executive Drive Pro suspension, a system that aims to make every journey more comfortable. Inherited from existing 7 Series models, it links the air suspension with the Dynamic Damper Control system to deliver what BMW claims is a sporty but exceptionally comfortable ride. Like Mercedes’ Magic Body Control system, it also scans the road surface to prime the suspension to suit the conditions.

Meanwhile, the BMW M760Li xDrive distinguishes itself from its lesser 7 Series siblings with M Performance body enhancements that include a new front apron incorporating larger front air intakes, BMW Icon adaptive LED headlights, an optional M rear spoiler and those all-important V12 badges on the rear pillars.

Inside, chrome detailing, and M and V12 logos abound, while the speedometer extends as far as 205mph, despite the car being electronically limited to 155mph. It’s a telling sign that this luxury saloon is built for speed.

Standard equipment includes powered leather seats front and rear, gesture control of ancillary functions and the latest generation BMW Professional Multimedia system with high-resolution colour touchscreen.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer even more comfort, BMW has created a second version called – wait for it – the BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence. If not the car with, currently, the longest name, it’s certainly one that doesn’t skimp on luxury.

Features include external chrome finishers, gloss-black calipers, a more understated exhaust note and removal of the vulgar M logos on the front wings. Inside, brushed aluminium, wood inlays, deep pile floor mats and an illuminated V12 badge complete the effect.

Both models go on sale towards the end of 2016, priced around £100,000.
