Sporty: tick. Utilitarian: tick. Vehicle: tick.

IF YOU were thinking what Kia needs is a crossover that’s a little bit bigger than the Stonic but a little bit smaller than the Sportage, you’re in luck: behold, the Kia XCeed.

The Korean carmaker has released the first image of its sleek new model ahead of its full reveal later this month.

As the name suggests, the XCeed is based on the Ceed hatchback and joins the Ceed Sporstwagen estate and Proceed shooting brake in the range, but as a crossover SUV it rides higher and has a more rugged look than its kin.

It’s also rocks a distinctly sporty profile with what Kia describes as a “swept-back, coupé-like appearance”, with the company suggesting in its teaser statement that while drivers sit higher than they would in a hatchback, the XCeed isn’t as tall as its key rivals and the low hip point results in a sportier driving position.

Interior space and luggage capacity are claimed to be comparable to similar SUVs, though.

Kia promises more details on the XCeed on June 26, with UK on-sale date, specification and pricing to be confirmed “in due course”.
