News: Experienced drivers ‘would fail the theory test now’

Two-thirds of older drivers couldn't pass the multiple choice test

TWO-THIRDS of drivers have forgotten so much of the Highway Code that they would fail their theory test if they had to take it again, new research has found.

A study of 50 experienced drivers found that half failed the multiple-choice section, mainly by incorrectly identifying road signs. A third of participants failed the hazard perception section, where drivers must watch a video and click when they see a dangerous scenario ahead.

Churchill insurance, which commissioned the study, said the lack of knowledge was alarming and would bolster calls by some road charities to force drivers to retake elements of their test after a set number of years to ensure their knowledge of the road remained current.
