DRIVING PURISTS, it’s time to get your wallets out: the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 is available to pre-order today, priced from £18,495 on-the-road.

The little roadster’s focus on lightweight rear-wheel-drive fun rather than outright power has proved popular over the years – it’s the best-selling two-seater sports car of all time with total production surpassing 950,000 units in January.
Potential buyers will be pleased to note that even more bulk has been cut from the all-new model: it’s a full 100kg lighter on its feet than the outgoing model, with 50:50 weight distribution front to rear. The reduction in weight means the new MX-5 weighs 1,050kg – around the same as the original model, which launched in 1989.
Mazda also hasn’t gone crazy with the engines – two versions are available, the largest of which is a 2-litre unit with 158bhp. A smaller 1.5-litre motor produces 129bhp. There’s a choice of nine models across five trim levels, all of which come with alloy wheels, LED headlights, a leather steering wheel, plus a lightweight and sleek fabric hood. SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav have increasing levels of spec (see below)
Meanwhile, the 2015 Mazda MX-5 is shorter, lower and wider than the old car, with smaller overhangs and, Mazda says, the lowest centre of gravity yet.
The new MX-5 will make its UK debut at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed but if you’re champing at the bit, pre-ordering opens today via the Mazda UK website.
