The Motability Scheme for Disabled Drivers

Category: Mobility

The Motability SchemeMotability is a national charity that owns the largest fleet of cars in the UK.

More than 550,000 disabled people use the Motability Scheme.  A further 1.3 million are eligible to join but have not taken advantage of doing so, simply because they may be unaware that they can.  The charity offers grants for driving lessons and car modifications and advice on how modifications can be made whenever they are necessary.

The Scheme is open to anyone who receives either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. Preferential loans are also available, which can help cover the cost of purchasing and maintaining a new car.

Adaptations

These are devices that can be fitted to a vehicle so that driving is safer and more comfortable.  Getting in and out of the car can also be made easier. There are a number of adaptations available, many for no extra cost, including adaptations to help with:

  • Speed and steering
  • Signalling and safety
  • Stowage
  • Seating and access

No driving licence required

If you opt for a lease agreement you do not need to drive. You can nominate up to two drivers who may be friends or relatives.  Parents or carers can apply on behalf of a child aged three years and upwards. Proposed drivers must not have any serious driving convictions, disqualifications, or endorsements within the last five years.
