Being able to drive gives us independence and freedom. Mobility outside the home is vital, particularly for elderly people and people with a disability. When a medical condition means that it is best not to drive for a while it can be difficult getting back behind the wheel.
Across the country there are specialist Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) who are equipped to perform assessments and provide training in specially adapted dual controlled cars fitted with hand controls, left foot accelerators and use infra-red technology to operate various controls, including the direction indicators.
Most ADIs that specialise in this area take training at such establishments as the Queen Elizabeth Foundation (QEF) in Carshalton, Surrey. We can strongly recommend their excellent mobility services to the public, including practical disabled driving assessments, product trial, training and advice. Their fleet includes a number of hi-tech vehicles that have swivel seats or have been adapted to drive from wheelchair:
