Recent Road Tax Changes Guide

Car tax, formally as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on all models registered before 1st March 2001 was based on engine size.  There was one rate for capacity up to and including 1549cc and another for sizes over 1549cc. Since then, the rates have been determined by CO2 emissions and type of fuel used. This information is contained on the car’s log book - also called a V5 document.

4x4 (four by four) vehicles, also known as four wheel drive (4WD) and all wheel drive (AWD) fitted with winter tyres will give the driver better grip on the road.  The extra traction of all four wheels driving the car will help with moving off and steering, as well as reducing the risk of getting stuck in the snow.

When scrapping an old car or van you can only take it to authorised scrap yard, known as an Authorised Treatment Facility or ATF. While many places may well accept your car, it is only authorised treatment facilities that can issue you with the correct documentation that you will need to inform the DVLA. ATFs are also the only places that are regulated to break up your car in an way that is environmentally friendly and legal.
