M1 Tale
A Vauxhall Nova was heading along the M1 Motorway and passing
Newport Pagnell.
The vehicle suddenly veered into the central barrier,
then careered across the carriageway and ran up the grass embankment.
The Nova driver informed the investigating police officer that
he had lost control and that no other vehicle was involved in
the incident.
The officer removed the dangerous debris from the
motorway and discovered that there were particles of another vehicle
in that detritus. Moving on to the police post at Newport Pagnell
the police officer was approached by an RAC officer who stated
that he had witnessed a white van impacting the rear of the Nova,
but the van had continued on its way. The RAC officer had noted
the vehicle's registration and the constable began enquiries to
determine what had actually happened.
Having traced the van driver he contacted him by
telephone. The driver admitted to having finished 30+ hours work
before driving along the motorway at the time of the incident
- but denied having had an accident. He believed that he had fallen
asleep at the wheel, in the vicinity of Newport Pagnell and had
awakened with a jolt - but there had been nothing in the near
vicinity ahead of him.
It appears that he had impacted the rear of the
Nova and forced him off the carriageway but neither he, nor the
Nova driver, had realised that another driver had been involved
in their respective incidents.
