Driving Instruction

A blend of interpersonal skills, a sense of humour and product knowledge are a starting point

You love driving and you feel that you'd make a good teacher, but have you the patience of a Saint and a doctor's bedside manner ?

There will always be people who want and need to learn to drive, so equally there will always be a call for professional driving instructors to teach them.

Becoming a qualified Driving Instructor is not simply starting a new job, but learning the skills of a new profession which can last the rest of your working life.

A blend of good interpersonal skills, a sense of humour and product knowledge are a good starting point. You will find each student driver has a different character and personality, there'll hardly be a dull moment ! One lesson might be with a 17 year old who has the mind of a 'boy racer', the next could be with a mature learner like Maureen Reece of television documentary 'Driving School' fame.

You need to be patient - it's not always easy to be the perfect driver and spend your time sitting next to people who can't drive ! On balance, it is very satisfying to consider that the skills you are teaching will provide a foundation for good driving throughout their motoring lives.

Sometimes people choose driving instruction as a career to escape the mundane 9 to 5 existence of an office or factory based job. They enjoy the variety that it offers and the flexibility of hours. BSM even offers a part time franchise option for those people who are only available on certain days of the week or times of the day.

Teaching people to drive is highly skilled. To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you will have to undergo and pass three parts of an examination. Gaining the qualification will mean that you are able to provide learner drivers with a level of professional instruction that will enable them not only to pass the theoretical and practical driving tests, but also and, most importantly, to become safe and confident drivers on the road. It is also highly rewarding.

For most instructors, the most enjoyable part of their work is to share people's achievement as they pass the driving test. Knowing that you're the person who's helped them achieve their goal is enormously satisfying - together with the fact that they'll probably remember you for the rest of their lives !

Driving Ambition
Nearly all driving instructors are self employed, meaning that there is a larger degree of freedom and flexibility than in many other professions. This should appeal to women, who are always in demand as instructors, yet only 15% of DSA registered instructors are female.

BSM - Provide Courses in Driving Instruction and Continuing Professional Development

BSM provides accredited training courses not only for new instructors, but also in-house Continuing Professional Development Courses (CPD) for ADIs.

ADI Register
DSA is responsible for maintaining a register of car driving instructors and voluntary registers of lorry and fleet driving instructors.
